New Year’s Resolutions for 2018Newsweek says “Being a better person is the top New Year’s resolutions for 2018, according to a new poll from Marist College in New York.”

Their findings show that about 12 percent of those surveyed want to become a better person in 2018. The same amount reported wanting to lose weight in the new year. Only 7 percent of those surveyed want to improve their overall health, and 9 percent would like to eat healthier, exercise more or get a better job.

While only 44% make New Year’s resolutions, and probably even fewer keep them, the start of the new year is a perfect time to make new habits or even reinvent ourselves. I found it disturbing that so few people have $400 in the bank. That so few could find it easy to pay for an unexpected expense of $400. Why not start a rainy day fund? Start right now to put away $1.00 a day in a sugar bowl. By the end of the year, you will have $365 saved. That money is not for some wild spree, but your safety net.

Weight loss is always a wish or one of New Year’s resolutions for the new year, but the loss of weight comes so slowly, it is hard to make it a habit. Forget about the goal of losing 10% of your weight. Instead, get a calendar and each day enter how much you walked. Gradually increase the time you walk or the miles. I started out walking a mile and increased my distance to two miles then three miles. If you don’t have a way to measure your distance walk around the block then two blocks. Some blocks are large, then ten blocks equal a mile. If small blocks, then twenty blocks equal a mile. Mark it down on your calendar. If you do this every day, soon you will have a trend going that you will be loath to break. Like an alcoholic in AA. Just make it one day at a time. Pretty soon those days become weeks, and months, then years. Making a habit of walking can help you lose weight and be more healthy.

New Year’s Resolutions for 2018

How about the goal of being a better person as a New Year’s resolutions for 2018? Is this a measurable goal? Try smiling at one person every day or asking one person every day. “How are you?” Get out of yourself. If you are not interested in them, then fake it. As they say, “Fake it until you make it.” You will be surprised how interesting the world can be. Take notice of the small things and appreciate the life you live. Today, I glanced at the blue sky and was amazed at the clouds. They were odd puffs of cirrus clouds. Odd in that I’ve never seen clouds like that before.

One of the best New Year’s resolutions for 2018 is to be grateful for everything. Be grateful for new friends, for the savings you are accumulating, be grateful for the ability to walk, be grateful for the lightness of your living. Be grateful for the color of the butterflies, the sound of the birds in the trees, the sound of children laughing, the noise of the city, the waves on the beach, the mooing of cows, and the smell of freshly cut grass.
