Americans are scared. They have lost their jobs temporarily (we hope), and there are bills to pay and obligations to meet. They don’t know how they will pay for housing, which was taking 30% or more of their monthly income before the lockdown. Not only do they have that pressing problem, but their children have lost their jobs, and parents may feel they have to support their children once again. It all just trickles up. The landlords or lenders are under pressure from below, but the rental income has dried up, and they can’t meet their bills. No one knows how long this quarantine will last.

Already, applications for unemployment soared over three million in the first week, and last week it gapped up an additional seven million.

Americans Are Scared

President Trump’s decision to suspend evictions and foreclosures stops Jackson County from carrying out removals through until at least April 18. Gov. Mike Parson announced Wednesday that state utility providers have agreed to discontinue nonpayment-related service shutoffs for the duration of Missouri’s State of Emergency declaration.

The next problem shows up when individuals try to settle up with lenders and landlords. Suppose you owe two months’ rent, and you are expected to bring everything current.  The threat of bankruptcy, eviction, or foreclosure is back, scaring a lot of people.

Caitlyn Rosen writes in The Wichita Eagle, “But once the suspensions end, those bills, interest and late fees are due. She worries that tenants bills’ may pile up.”

“If someone is not paying their rent along the way, they’re going to have an insurmountable balance at the end of this situation potentially,” said. Robert Long, president of Kansas City-based Landlords Inc.

It’s “hard to overstate how destabilizing” it will be if tenants emerge from the pandemic only to face eviction.

This Is Temporary

We said recently that this is temporary. It may be temporary, but it is unbelievable to experience a time of no sports in the nation, no movies in the Cineplex, unable to eat at restaurants. A whole industry has sprung up overnight, takeout delivered by Uber. No more dining out with friends for a while in their homes. Going to the supermarket and forced to use the magic gel for protection and then to see so many with face masks. There is little vehicular traffic and very few people walking on the streets. I hope you can use this time to meditate, begin a new hobby like playing an instrument, or reading that book for which you have yearned to start.

It is hard to believe the world we live in. I fear that stuck in a house for weeks with your mate will bring on more divorces and violence. Already there’s a fear that there could be food riots as grocery supplies fail to be delivered.

I like the Mexican way: Just give a Mexican shrug and say It’s Mexico as if it is just our fate. It will pass.
